NEW: Zim sees improvement in employees’ welfare

Employees welfare continues to improve in line with the growing economy, as Government is working to align with dictates of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to protect workers’ rights and cushion them from challenges arising from emerging global challenges.

This came out during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of the fourth generation Decent Work Country Programme for Zimbabwe (DWCP) (2022-2025) in Victoria Falls on Monday.

The MoU was signed by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and social partners.

Speaking at the event, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima commended workers’ invaluable contribution towards growing the economy, which has since transitioned from stability to growth.

“Resource availability has been one of the challenges confronting the successful implementation of the previous DWCPs,” he said.

“I am happy to note that on our own we have continued to make inroads in the convincing Treasury to make Decent Work the centrepiece of our transition to an upper middle-income economy by 2030.”

Professor Mavima said formalising the informal sector would help to further decent work and improve the quality of jobs.

ILO assistant director-general and regional director for Africa, Ms Cynthia Samuel-Olonjuwon, said: “These phenomena are threatening to reverse progress made in the global fight against poverty as well as widen the already unacceptable levels of inequalities across and within countries, and to hamper the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The global call to action for a human-centred recovery that ILO constituents, including Zimbabwe, unanimously adopted in June 2021 provide the roadmap for an inclusive and sustainable approach to rebuild our labour markets, societies, and economies.”

Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe president Mr Demos Mbauya said employers view decent work and productivity as integral to any business strategy.
