Zimbabwe’s table tennis team will miss the services of two of their best players when they travel to Botswana for the Southern Region ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) World Championships Qualifiers.
Eight Southern African countries will, from June 29 to July 2, battle it out for the three slots available at the 2024 ITTF World Championships.
Zimbabwe will depart for Botswana on Wednesday without their two best players – Tinotenda Fambira and Tatenda Mamvura.
The duo has been excused from the qualifiers, as they are set to go for a full-month training camp in China in preparation for the Indoor Table Tennis Olympics later this year.
Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union secretary-general Tinashe Duri confirmed the duo’s absence.
“We are leaving for Botswana on Wednesday, where we will take part in the Southern Region ITTF World Championships Qualifiers set for Gaborone from June 29 to July 2.
“We will be travelling with eight players, minus two of our best players in Tinotenda Fambira and Tatenda Mamvura, who are set to go for a month-long training camp in China as part of their preparations for the Indoor Olympics,” he said.
“The team is in high spirits, and we believe that the eight-member team that has been assembled will help the nation qualify for the 2024 World Championships.”
