Zimbabwe’s sweet potato production has increased by 33 percent in the 2023/2024 season from the previous season, due to the virus-free sweet potato vine distribution programme that was recently introduced by Government.

Posting on X, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development said sweet potato was set to increase to 276 000 metric tonnes this year.

“Sweet potato production is estimated at 276 784 metric tonnes, a 33 percent increase from 207 529 metric tonnes produced in the 2021/2022 season,” said the Ministry.

“This increased production is attributable to the virus-free vine distribution scheme under the Rural Development 8.0.”
