NEW: Zimbabwe, Rwanda to jointly market tourism destinations

Zimbabwe and Rwanda have agreed to market their tourism products together to maximise benefits from their product offerings.

The formulation of hybrid packages will be handled by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and the tourism wing of the Rwanda Development Board.

Addressing journalists at the end of the three-day trade and investment conference between the two countries in Harare, ZimTrade chief executive officer Mr Allan Majuru said synergies between the two countries are presently underexplored.

“We had a number of discussions and among those was an agreement that the two countries can come together and jointly market tourist destinations.

“This can see us offering more value to tourists and also increasing our trade receipts,” said Mr Majuru.

Rwanda Development Board deputy CEO Mr Zephanie Niyonkuru said the hospitality he experienced in Zimbabwe is similar to that offered in Rwanda.

“There are many opportunities, and tourism is one of them. The ZTA and the tourism arm of RDB will work out the modalities of how the agreement will work, but that is one area we are excited about,” said Mr Niyonkuru.

Both countries cumulatively generate US$1,5 billion per year from tourism, with Zimbabwe accounting for about 66 percent of that figure.
