FOLLOWING the recent launch of Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a lot has been achieved in garnering support from other countries, Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations,
Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, has said.
More than 70 countries have reportedly been engaged to support Zimbabwe’s candidature.
“We have engaged about 70 countries. We have been working hard to ensure our bid succeeds. We are continuing with this campaign,” said Amb Mushayavanhu.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira had a bilateral meeting with Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma Theresa Lazaro in New York yesterday to share notes as Manila is similarly bidding for a non-permanent seat on the
UNSC representing Asia.
“We had a successful meeting which was anchored on our campaign to be voted into the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. I am going to have more such meetings up until the launch of our bid on Thursday,” he said.
Being a member of the Security Council will give Zimbabwe increased global influence and an opportunity to participate in legally binding decisions and contribute to global peace and security.
Zimbabwe is a peace-loving nation whose foreign policy is premised on being a friend to all and enemy to none.
