PRESIDENT MNANGAGWA has pledged Government’s commitment in implementing the Beijing Declaration, a pivotal UN resolution adopted in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women to advance women’s rights and gender equality.
In a speech read on his behalf by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira at the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) High-level Meeting on the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in New York, US,
yesterday, the President said progressive legislation and policies have empowered women in Zimbabwe.
The country has long domesticated the UN Charter and further guaranteed the right to equal dignity and opportunities as enshrined in Section 80 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
“Zimbabwe is focusing on addressing poverty to ensure equitable and inclusive economic empowerment, contributing to Vision 2030 and expanding equal access to digital technologies to advance sustainable development goals,” said President Mnangagwa.
“Efforts are being underpinned by improved gender data generation, sustainable financing and mainstreaming of adolescent girls and youth rights. A robust road map is accelerating implementation, supported by strengthened coordination mechanisms …
Zimbabwe stands ready to work with all partners to ensure that the vision of the Beijing Declaration continues to translate into tangible outcomes for present and future generations.”
With 80 years of existence, the United Nations has made significant progress in addressing gender equality.
The UN set aside September 22 this year to discuss progress and challenges faced in addressing gender issues.
