Over US$100 million has gone towards the refurbishment of Zimbabwe’s tourism facilities, acting Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Dr Jenfan Muswere has said.
Government is also prioritising entry points and road infrastructure to ensure easy accessibility to tourist destinations.
Speaking at the official opening of the 2021 edition of Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Virtual Expo on Wednesday, Dr Muswere said Government is going to continue employing strategies that will help capacitate the industry.
“We have witnessed significant investment into the sector, driven by private sector and Government,” he said.
“To date over US$100 million has gone into the refurbishment of tourism facilities and there are new products that have been launched over the past two years.
“Government has availed resources to ensure that accessibility of our tourism product is made easy through the refurbishment and expansion of ports of entry points such as the Beitbridge Border Post, Kazungula Border Post and the Robert Mugabe International Airport.
“In addition, all our major roads leading to key tourism destinations and facilities have been placed on the priority list of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme.”
Dr Muswere also highlighted that some of the initiatives launched over the past few months have yielded positive results on the local market.
He thanked Zimbabweans for heeding the call for domestic tourism.
“Since the launch of the ZimBho campaign in November 2020, there has been a notable increase in the consumption of tourism products by locals, as shown by a sharp 45 percent increase in entries into our National Parks and Museums,” he said.
