THABANI GONYE looks to have hit the ground running, with the new Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) president making sweeping changes to the organisation’s commissions.

According to a statement released recently, the committee not only made their commission appointments as per Article 25:1 of the ZOC constitution, but also placed them into clusters under Gonye’s vice presidents Fredreck Ndlovu and Leticia Chipandu.

Ndlovu will now head the sport, technical, development, clean athletes and learning cluster, which will be made up of the athletes commission; the technical and development commission; sport education; leadership growth; systems, digital, technical and research commissions.

In the interim, the seasoned volleyball administrator will also head the medical, sport science and protection of clean athletes commission.

Cuthbert Nyasango, Rick Fulton, Tendayi Tagara, Chipo Zumburami and ZOC chief executive Stephen Mudawarima were tasked with chairing various commissions.

Zimbabwe Netball Association boss Chipandu will head the commercial, corporate, people and equity cluster.

This cluster will be made up of the media, communication, public relations and diplomacy commission chaired by Charmaine Chamboko, broadcaster Merit Munzwembiri’s gender, equity and diversity commission, including Olympic values promotion, Olympians, peace, environment & safe sports commission (Abel Chimukoko); sport for all and volunteers commission (Stonard Mapfumo); human resources commission (Godfrey Sunguro); and the marketing and resource mobilisation commission under Mudawarima.

Mudawarima will head the two commissions on an interim basis until a substantive chairperson can be appointed.

“The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee is proud to announce the commission appointments by the ZOC president Mr Thabani Gonye,” read part of the statement.

“This is in accordance with Article 25:1 of the ZOC Constitution, which states that “The president shall, after consultation with the executive board, appoint commissions and or working groups to undertake special functions for a specified period in line with the strategic focus of ZOC and the IOC.

“These are transitional structures towards the 2021 – 2025 Strategic Plan Development later this year,” ZOC said.

Sunguro will also chair the audit and finance commission, while Ringisayi Mapondera will now head the legal, membership and standards compliance commission.
