NEW: Registration for ex-Wenela miners begins

GOVERNMENT will next week begin testing and registering Zimbabweans who worked in South African gold mines under the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (Wenela) in order to assist the ex-miners get compensation from companies in the neighbouring country.

In a statement on Monday, Permanent Secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Simon Masanga, said the ex-Wenela mine workers as well as beneficiaries of the deceased workers should bring positive identification, name of mine and period worked.

“The Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in partnership with National Social Services Authority (NSSA) will be testing for pneumoconiosis and silicosis, as well as registration of the ex-Wenela mine workers. This is being done to assist the ex-Wenela mine workers to get compensation from South Africa mining companies,” he said in a statement.

“The mobile testing and registration will be carried out in all of the country’s ten provinces. We are calling on all ex-Wenela workers to come forward and get tested and be registered. This exercise is being done for free.”
