THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) have thrown their full weight behind the appointment of Robbie Du Rand as interim marketing, events and sponsorship manager, saying the former Sables player will certainly add value to the team’s aspirations of qualifying to the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Du Rand’s appointment was announced on Thursday via the team’s official Facebook page.

“Robbie Du Rand, a Zimbabwean and former Sables player, has offered his experience to the Sables Trust to assist the team as the interim marketing, events and sponsorship manager of the Zimbabwe Sables and Goshawks in South Africa for the Currie Cup competition 2022 and preparation for the World Cup qualifiers in France in July,” read the post.

“With the squad expected to be based in South Africa during the Currie Cup and then expected to head to France in July 2022 for the World Cup 2023 qualifiers, Robbie’s services will be an asset in helping the Sables Trust to secure serious sponsorship and set up a number of events in South Africa to help raise the heavy financial requirements of these trips …

“We look forward to working with him over the next six months,” continued the post.

ZRU CEO Sifiso Made said Du Rand’s expertise could also extend to the pitch as well.

“Listen, Robbie has added value to every team has been on,” said Made.

“He was very instrumental in helping us source funds during our time in Stellenbosch last year, and given that we will be back in South Africa again for the Currie Cup, we are confident that he will be an asset.

“If we are to qualify for the World Cup, which is the main goal here, we will need to further expand all technical departments …Presently, some of our coaches on the technical bench are not full-time, to expect them to be with the team for weeks on end in South Africa is not realistic.”
