THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) have sent their condolences to the Dzinomurumbi family, following the passing on of former Sables player, coach and manager, Zivanai Dzinomurumbi, on Thursday.
“We send our condolences to the Dzinomurumbi family on the passing on of Zivanai Dzinomurumbi, and pray that God grants them comfort during these trying times,” said ZRU chief executive, Sifiso Made.
“I cannot go into the specifics of his passing, as that is the prerogative of the family, but I can safely say that they are in our prayers.
“Zivanai (Dzinomurumbi) is a true legend of the game, and he shall be dearly missed.
“He served his country with distinction as a player and continued to do so as a coach and manager of the team,” he said.
ZRU broke the news of Dzinomurumbi’s death on Thursday, on its official Facebook page.
“The president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, Aaron Jani, and his board are sad to announce the untimely passing of Sables’ legend, Zivanai Dzinomurumbi, this afternoon at his farm in Driefontein, Masvingo,” read the post.
“Funeral details and arrangements will be announced in due course. May his dearest soul rest in everlasting peace.”
A pioneer of the revolution that paved the way for the inclusion of more blacks in the Sables, Dzinomurumbi featured for Old Miltonians, and also helped found a black-administered outfit, Highlanders, now known as Panthers.
He teamed up with Victor Olonga in the struggle against race-related injustices within the sport, and was the first person of colour to wear the Sables jersey.
