ZVIMBA East residents, particularly those that reside in Ward 25, which borders Harare, have been urged to plant “as many trees as they possibly can” as a way of combatting deforestation, which has become rampant in this peri-urban area.
The call to plant trees was made during the National Tree Planting Day commemorations which were held at Umuzururu Primary School on December 4.
The National Tree planting Day, which was set aside to encourage the nation to plant and conserve trees, is commemorated every year on the first Saturday of December.
As part of the commemorations, Zvimba East residents – who were being led by Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka and Zvimba East legislator, Mr Tawanda Tungamirai, planted trees at Umuzururu Primary School.
Zvimba Rural District Council donated 4 000 trees, which were distributed to several schools in the ward.
Said Zvimba Rural District councillor for Ward 25, Mr Ruzai Muchaurawa:
“As a community, we learnt how to plant and nurture trees. This ward is closer to Harare and we have serious problem with wood poachers, who have literally camped in our midst.
“From now on, we are going to regularly plant trees.”
