BARELY a year after announcing themselves to the world with their debut single, “Colour my dreams“, Charleston Trust Primary School Choir has received its maiden Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA) nomination.
Last week, the choir was announced among the Outstanding Newcomers in all genres, a feat that might herald their gong-getterific journey en-route to the African Children of the Year Awards to be held in South Africa in November.
Theirs has been a roller-coaster ride after touring Harare for the Let Them School Arts Festival in July, performing at the Red Cross Graduation hosted by the First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa and curtain-raising at the recently held Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo where they performed alongside the industry’s creme de la creme.
On the RoilBAA nomination, the choir’s director and music co-ordinator Trevor Mawaka said words cannot fully describe the feeling they have.
“Words cannot describe the kind of elation we have. The past couple of days will forever be etched in our memory as we performed with our icons for the Sanganai/Hlanganani Family Music Show.
“It has been a great feeling really and as a choir, we can’t believe it. We just feel appreciated,” he said.
The writing has always been on the wall for the choir as track by track, they have been knocking on Heaven’s door and the pearly gates have gaped.
For the RoilBAA gong, the choir will have to topple Bhekiwe, Joy Rukanza, Acquilla K, and Victoria Falls songster Andrea The Vocalist.
The multi-disciplinary awards seek to recognise and honour exceptional individuals and collaborative artistic efforts in the city of Bulawayo and Matabeleland provinces. The sixth edition is set to take place on December 24 at a venue yet to be advised. – @eMKlass_49
