TEN Bulawayo teams will compete in the newly formed Elders Pool League which kicks off today.
The 10 clubs that have registered for the new billiards league in the City of Kings and Queens are Chillers, Dragon, Entumbane, Exchange, Marula, Nketa 8, Queens, Raylton, Skittle Palace and Nkulumane Police. A member of the Elders Pool League’s organising committee, Archie Sholtz said the establishment of the new league is meant to accommodate pool players aged over 40 at different clubs in the city who can no longer match the cue sticks skills of young pool players. Scholtz expect more clubs to be formed and join the league.
“Since 2008, we have had a number of people in Bulawayo who have been passionate about pool. The game of pool has been evolving with youngsters mastering a number of new skills as compared to the elderly people who still have a soft spot for the game. As such, the elders, I mean those who are aged 40 and above, thought of having their own league.
“Ten clubs have affiliated to the new setup whose first fixtures will be played on Sunday (today),” said Scholtz.
The first weekend fixtures will see Queens taking on Nketa 8 while Dragons do duty against Entumbane. The two games will be played at Queens Sports Club. Nkulumane-based Chillers will seek to utilize home advantage when they fight it out against Skittle Palace while Raylton have a date with Exchange. Based in the high density suburb of Emganwini, Marula will entertain Nkulumane Police.
