NEW: Whawha inmate reportedly takes own life

A PRISONER at Whawha Medium Prison in Gweru is believed to have taken his own life on Wednesday.

Elias Mahora (42) was spotted lying on the ground before being rushed to Gweru General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi confirmed the incident, saying they have roped in the police to investigate.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) is deeply saddened to report that an inmate, Elias Mahora, 42, passed away yesterday at Whawha Medium Prison in Gweru,” she said.

“While the investigation is still ongoing, initial reports suggest that Mahora may have taken his own life.

“He collapsed and was immediately transported to Gweru General Hospital, where he was unfortunately declared dead on arrival.”

Asst-Comm Khanyezi expressed ZPCS’ commitment to the welfare of prisoners during their stay in prison.

“The ZPCS is committed to the safety and well-being of all inmates under our custody,” she said.
