NGEZI Platinum were the biggest winners after the opening fixtures of the Northern Region Division One Soccer League which got underway over the weekend when they beat newcomers Zatex 4-0 at Baobab.Ngezi got their goals from Innocent Sokosi, who scored a brace, Mike Charamba and Merciful Ncube to collect maximum points in their first game of the season.

Sokosi was the first to score for his side in the first half before completing his double  in the last half while as Charamba and former Dynamos player and Motor Action player Ncube also weighed in with a goal each.

Ngezi Platinum coach, Clifton Kadurira said Sunday’s victory will boost the players’ confidence ahead of the season.

“The first games are important in building confidence in the players. Now they have started believing in themselves that they can pick more points. Newly promoted teams are tricky, it was difficult in the first half but we managed to score the first goal and then scored three in the second half. I think the guys did well in all departments and at the moment I don’t think there is any area we need to improve. We played well,  since these first games of the season are always difficult and they will be a little bit more competitive. We didn’t know how they play, so I think we did well,” said Kadurira.

In other matches played over the weekend Mushowani were held to 1-1 draw by Darwin, who are making their first appearance in the league while Gunners beat Lake Harvest 1-0 at Rufaro.

The former Premiership champions go their goal from McDonald Motsi and for a team that slightly missed on the championship last year it’s not a bad start.

Results: Kari United 1, DStv Rangers 1; Cargo Careers 0, ZRP Morris 0; Blue Swallows 2, Starbill 0; Ngezi Platinum 4, Zatex 0; Herentials 2, Blue Jets 2, Mushowani 1, Darwin 1; Gunners 1, Lake Harvest 0, ZRP FC 1, DC Academy 0; Black Rhinos 1, Seven Flames 1.
