THEY may have left it a little late to keep pace with log leaders Simba Bhora, but champions Ngezi Platinum Stars were in a non-nonsense mood as they condemned their former coach Rodwell Dhlakama’s Hwange deep into Castle Lager Premier Soccer League drop zone yesterday.
Hwange arrived at Baobab Stadium for the rescheduled fixture hoping to carry on with the fine form that had seen them beat CAPS United and hold FC Platinum.
But they were humiliated by the champions.
Ngezi took the lead in the 14th minute through a Takunda Benhura header.
Four-goal hero Benhura ensured there was no coming back for Hwange, who had chief striker Dominic Chungwa spurning a chance for a last-minute consolation when he saw goalkeeper Nelson Chadya save his kick from the penalty spot.
The other Ngezi goals came from 18-year-old Zimbabwe youth international Tanaka Munemo and seasoned forward Obriel Chirinda.
Benhura thanked his teammates for contributing to his four goals.
“I really would like to thank God and my teammates for a good game, even though I scored, it is for us all,’’ he said after the match.
Ngezi assistant coach Kumbirayi Mutiwekuziwa, who took charge in the absence of head coach Takesure Chiragwi, praised his charges for finding their range.
Chiragwi is away on Warriors duty in South Africa.
“We have been yearning for these goals galore and been training for this,” said Mutiwekuziwa.
“We are now on the right track to score more goals.”
There was nothing to smile about for Dhlakama following his team’s nightmarish afternoon.
“We are in the relegation zone and we wanted nothing short of a victory, but I was not happy with the boys’ display,” he said.
“We are going to take the upcoming fixtures each as they come, as we try to avoid relegation.’’
