A Non-Governmental Organisation, Hope for Children in Christ (HOCIC) has embarked on a rural developmental programme in Umguza District where it is rehabilitating water sources and irrigation schemes.
The project, which started in June this year is being conducted under the Food for Asset Programme and villagers are given grain, beans and cooking oil on a monthly basis to do the work.
In an interview this week, HOCIC programmes director Ms Sunga Mzeche said they were working directly with the community to rehabilitate dams, irrigation schemes and dip tanks in six wards.
“We have projects going on in Wards two, three, four, five, six and eight in Umguza District where we are rehabilitating Mandluntya and Fingo dams in Ward Three and Mabhada Dam in Ward Four,” said Ms Mzeche.
“In Ward Five we would construct a dip tank and lay a 5,3 km pipeline from Gwenya Dam to the community for a gardening project. We have embarked on three water projects in Ward Six where Khahlu and Luthi Dams will be rehabilitated to facilitate the development of community gardens. We hope that the programme will facilitate the completion of a dam in Ward Two and another one in Ward Eight.”
Mrs Mzeche said Umguza Rural District Council sponsored a community based planning programme which helped in the identification of the projects that needed attention.
The field officer for HOCIC, Mr Bakhokheli Dladla expressed satisfaction in the way the project was running.
“The projects are running smoothly as planned and our plan is to officially hand over to the community some of the finished facilities in November. They will be supervised by village and ward development committees,” said Mr Dladla.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is bankrolling the programme.
