A NON-Governmental organisation based in Binga, Ntengwe for Community Development, has initiated projects aimed at uplifting the standards of life for women, children and other vulnerable groups in the district.
The women-led organisation has been training women to ensure that they grasp different business concepts.
In an interview, Ntengwe for Community Development director Miss Elisabeth Markham said the organisation has a Tonga name which was directly translates to a black bird whose shrill, urgent call, alerts people of danger hence as an organisation their main aim was to alert women about drawbacks of not being independent.
“Among the projects was a training facility which saw about 100 women completing short courses like book writing and accounting which will help them to manage small businesses. This is an achievement to see women now skilled, it makes us as an organisation see more reason of celebrating International Women’s Day.”
Miss Markham said she has also facilitated small projects like irrigation schemes, weaving, sewing, gardening and building which have seen women in some parts of the district being able to donate more than 1 000 books and pens to local schools.
She said, “This was an accomplishment because the same women who were struggling to get one meal per day, are now able to provide their families with at least two meals per day after undergoing training.”
She said some of the women were also embarking on projects to build roads and a pre-school in the area.
Last Wednesday, which was International Women’s Day, some of the women who completed their course also donated sanitarywear to disadvantaged girls in the district.
