A tragic story of vengeance has emerged in Nyanga where a mother and her son who were killed by the family’s patriarch in 1977 are reportedly haunting the man’s adoptive family.
The Sanyangare family that adopted a young Ngazvirove Sanyangare recently told Acting Chief Saunyama’s court that they are suffering from the wrath of the restless spirits of his wife and son who are demanding justice for their deaths.
They pleaded with the Chief to assist them to perform some rituals to redirect the vengeance of the spirits to Ngazvirove’s unknown biological family.
Making his submissions before the court, Alouis Sanyangare said his father adopted Ngazvirove and gave him their family name.
“Our mother gave birth to Ngazvirove before marrying our father.
“When our father married her, he took Ngazvirove in when he was of school going age.
“Our father gave him our surname and Ngazvirove grew up in our family, even though he was not one of us.
“However, after Ngazvirove got married and had a child, he killed his child and wife and reported the matter to the family elders and the police. Webster who is here today witnessed him committing the crime. Ngazvirove fled to Harare where karma caught up with him years later and he was also murdered,” said Alouis.
He said when they heard that their half brother had been murdered in Harare, they thought that his sins would be buried with him, and there was no need to appease his murdered wife’s family.
However, the avenging spirits of the woman and her child are causing endless misfortunes within the Sanyangare family.
“We are living in abject poverty because of the avenging spirits. They are demanding appeasement, but since we are poor, we do not have the means to appease them. We need help,” said Alouis.
“People have been dying in their numbers and family members are being possessed by the spirits of the two as they demand appeasement.
“What is confusing is that Ngazvirove was not our blood relative. We were only related through our mother and his sins should not haunt us, but his real family,” he said.
However, another family member, Tererai Sanyangare, said a traditional healer told them that the avenging spirits are tormenting the family because Webster witnessed the killing and did not stop it.
“We do not know what to do, which is why we are begging Chief Saunyama to assist us with ideas on how to redirect the two’s vengeance to Ngazvirove’s biological family,” said Tererai.
Webster said he can’t understand why his family is being punished because he witnessed the murders.
“I was herding cattle and still very young when this happened. When I saw my uncle killing his son and wife, I ran back home and informed the elders.
“Why are the avenging spirits targeting me and my family when I did what I was supposed to? I did not do anything wrong,” he said.
Acting Chief Saunyama adjourned the matter to a later date to allow Ngazvirove’s children and grandchildren to be summoned to the community court.
“If noone knows the whereabouts of Ngazvirove’s biological family, the avenging spirits and spiritual healers will guide you. However, we want his children and grandchildren here so that we deal with the matter in their presence,” he said.
