Mhondoro-Mubaira National Assembly representative Cde Sylvester Nguni has urged communal farmers to appreciate that cattle ranching contributes to economic revival. He said this when handing over 14 steers to constituents on Friday. Cde Nguni said restocking the national herd was only possible with full participation of communal farmers.
“We entered into a partnership with Makera Cattle Company, a firm specialising in beef production, to work with the farmers to produce top quality calves, in a programme expected to supplement the farmers’ income.
“We have come up with this programme so as to improve the breed of our people’s cattle.
“We have donated up to 121 cattle to the villagers in Mhondoro and have produced over 6 000 calves through cross-breeding in the past four years,” he said.
The programme is part of efforts by Zanu-PF to enhance the national herd under the party’s production and labour department.
Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Deputy Minister Responsible for Livestock, Paddy Zhanda, said: “This is a good programme which should be extended to the whole country because it develops and empowers our people.
“Cattle ranching is a very critical aspect in our economy and if people take it seriously and are empowered in this way, then we can be guaranteed of a prosperous nation.”
The programme started in 2010 and has seen villagers in Mhondoro-Mubaira receiving 121 cattle.
