ZIMBABWEAN striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is one goal away from becoming the outright owner of a remarkable South African Premier Soccer League record after scoring in seven consecutive league matches for AmaZulu.
The 23-year-old, who is currently on national duty in Morocco, continued his extraordinary start to the season by finding the net again in AmaZulu’s 1-0 victory over Polokwane City on Saturday.
Ngwenya’s latest strike took him to seven consecutive Betway Premiership matches with a goal, matching a record that has stood for more than two decades.
According to OptaJabu, only Grant Young and Esau Kanyenda have previously managed the feat in the South African PSL era.
Young scored in seven straight league matches for Hellenic in 1999, while Kanyenda matched the record with Jomo Cosmos in 2002.
Now Ngwenya has joined them — and he has the chance to go one better.
The AmaZulu forward has scored in all seven of the club’s league matches this season, with his latest effort proving decisive against Polokwane City.
His consistency has been extraordinary.
Ngwenya has already found the net eight times in the Betway Premiership this season, including one match in which he scored twice.
That means he has now scored in every league appearance for Usuthu, establishing himself as one of the most prolific attackers in the division.
The latest goal also helped AmaZulu continue their strong start under Arthur Zwane, with the Durban club securing another three points to maintain their position among the early contenders.
But the focus will now shift towards Ngwenya’s next appearance.
Another goal would take him beyond Young and Kanyenda and give him the longest scoring streak in PSL league history.
For a player who has only recently emerged as one of AmaZulu’s leading attacking threats, Ngwenya is now on the verge of a record that has survived since the late 1990s.
