Nigeria’s Big Brother Africa (BBA) Hotshots runner-up, Tayo has dismissed reports making the rounds that he was given $350,000 by Nigerian billionaire Ayiri Emani as compensation for losing out on the BBA prize of $300,000. Some BBA viewers, especially those in Nigeria took to social networks saying Tayo was robbed and should have won the game over Tanzania’s Idris who emerged as the ultimate Hotshot on Sunday evening. While Tayo had popularity votes from two countries, Idris had five, mostly from East African countries as he was the only remaining Housemate from that region.
According to the reports, the Nigerian businessman is also a fan of the much-loved Tayo and had vowed to pay him much more than the slated $300,000 prize money in case he did not win.
But Tayo who was still in South Africa for interviews and meeting fans, denied the claims on Radio 1 South Africa, saying he was disturbed as the reports were actually sending away those who may want to assist him.
According to him, people will see the reports and think he is rich when he is not. He therefore pleaded with fellow Nigerians to stop posting lies about him on the Internet as they were closing help that could come. He said he did not even know who the businessman was.
Tayo’s case is similar to that of Munya Chidzonga who had been tipped to win by many BBA viewers. He lost to Nigeria’s Uti, who up to today is scared of visiting Zimbabwe as he feels people here are still angry over his victory. So disappointed were Zimbabweans that they had to open a bank account to try and raise $300,000 to give Chidzonga.
However, upon returning from South Africa, President Robert Mugabe invited Chidzonga for a meeting where he presented him with a $300,000 cheque and signed his flag for doing the country proud.
