THREE Emakhandeni suburb residents in Bulawayo were attacked in separate incidents in three different locations by suspected machete gangs on Wednesday night.

The attacks, according to Ward 11 Councillor Suzan Sithole, happened between 6:30pm and 8pm.

The three victims were ferried to Mpilo Hospital with serious injuries inflicted by what Clllr Sithole said are believed to be machetes.

“One of the victims was attacked in an open space near the Emakhandeni tennis court while he was on his way home. Residents rushed to the scene when they heard him screaming for help and his family rushed him to the hospital,” said Cllr Sithole.

The other two victims were attacked in the vicinity of the local shops in the suburb and residents found one of them with deep cuts on the head, arms and legs.

“An ambulance had to ferry both residents to hospital at the same. The senseless attacks took place in the same section of Emakhandeni,” she said.

In a WhatsApp recording widely circulating on social media, one resident said one of the victims, a middle-aged man, was robbed of less than US$10, shoes and a cellphone.

“The machete gang is back, and we urge residents to avoid walking alone at night. A resident has just been attacked near Maunga Shops and he is bleeding profusely from the head and arms.

“We suspect the machete gang are moving in groups, robbing and attacking residents.

Bulawayo police are yet to confirm the attacks.
