NINE people were killed and 25 others injured when a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train collided with a bus at a level crossing in Chiredzi on Tuesday morning.

In a statement, NRZ said the accident occurred at around 7AM when a train travelling from Triangle to the NRZ Lundi siding collided with the bus.

According to NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager Mr Andrew Kunambura, the accident occurred when the driver of the bus failed to observe level crossing rules, which require motorists to stop and check for oncoming trains before proceeding.

“Unfortunately, nine passengers in the bus died on the spot. They include seven adults and two minors,” said Mr Kunambura.

He said 25 passengers from the bus were taken to hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Mr Kunambura said emergency services, including the police, ambulances and fire brigade, were on site managing the active rescue operation.

“Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We also wish speedy recovery to the injured passengers,” he said.

NRZ urged motorists to strictly observe level crossing regulations to avoid loss of life and injuries.

The railway operator said further updates would be shared through its official channels as verified details emerge.
