A 25-year-old inmate, who recently escaped from Karoi Prison where he was serving a 15-month jail term, had his jail stint extended last week after a Karoi magistrate imposed an effective nine-month jail sentence for the latest offence. Ms Sheila Nazombe had initially sentenced Brighton Masheedzanwa to 12 months in jail before conditionally suspending three months of the sentence.
The court heard that Masheedzanwa of Mangawaira Village under Chief Dandawa was serving a 15-month jail term for stock theft and unlawful entry at Karoi Prison.
Prosecutor Mr Webster Dimingu said Masheedzanwa escaped from Karoi Prison on March 5 while applying herbicides in one of the institution’s maize fields.
Masheedzanwa and five other inmates had been booked out to the fields by prison officer McDonald Kapfudza.
Mr Dimingu said after reaching the other end of the field, Masheedzanwa abandoned the knapsack sprayer he was using within the maize crop before taking to his heels unnoticed. He was only arrested a week later while enjoying with friends at his rural home in Mangwaira Village.
