POLICE have identified nine of the 10 people who perished in a road accident that happened along the Harare-Bulawayo Road last Friday near Shangani.

The crash occurred at the 369KM peg at around 3PM, killing eight on the spot.  Two others died later – one on the way to the hospital and the other on admission to the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

The vehicle, a Toyota Granvia burst its right rear tyre, veered off the road and rolled thrice.

It was travelling towards Gweru with 13 passengers on board.  The driver is among the dead.

Police yesterday released the names of nine accident victims as one is yet to be identified.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said those who died are Bongani Ndlovu (25), Sitheni Ndlovu (23), Phanuel Chidyiwa Chikandiwa (64), Preggy Chibwe (57), Sunyboy Nkomo (39), Nyasha Magasa (27) and Abigail Gwezere (35).

The other two were identified as Mncedisi Moyo (30) from Mpopoma in Bulawayo and Allen Lunga of Ndlovu homestead under Chief Bunina in the Midland province.

Chief Supt Nyathi urged members of the public who are missing a relative to visit Gweru General Hospital for identification purposes.

He appealed to travellers to carry identification particulars at all times. “Members of the public are encouraged to carry their identity cards or passports when travelling from one point to another. This will help in identification processes in case of any mishaps,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
