Nine years for ivory possession

TWO Chimanimani men will spend the next nine years in prison after they were found guilty of possessing and trying to sell elephant tusks worth $1 100. Spring Rurumwa (37) from Machongwe Village and Dominic Chorera (49) from Chinyamwaka Village under Chief Muusha were found guilty of contravening Section 45:1 (b)of the Parks and Wildlife Act Chapter 21:05 when they appeared before Mr Langton Mukwengi.

Representing the State was Mr Brian Goto. Allegations were that on August 30 Chorera approached Detective Constable Zhou with the intention of selling him the ivory. Chorera, however led the detective to Rurumwa’s residence where the ivory was hidden.

Rurumwa took the ivory from under his bed and gave it to the detective. They pair was arrested and the ivory which weighed 4kg was recovered.
