At least nine prospective candidates have submitted their curriculum vitae for consideration to represent Zanu-PF in Hwedza North constituency that was left vacant following the death of Cde Simon Musanhu in January.
President Mugabe has set May 5 for the by-election in the constituency, while the nomination court will sit on March 16.
Cde Musanhu, who was Environment, Water and Climate Deputy Minister, collapsed and died at his home in Harare.
Zanu-PF acting provincial chairperson for Mashonaland East Cde Aeneas Chigwedere said in an interview yesterday that more names were expected to be submitted before the deadline on Thursday.
“The party’s provincial election directorate is meeting this Saturday to screen the names and remain with those that qualify,” he said.
“We will hold a primary election on Wednesday next week.
“I hear that three more CVs might be coming. I am just coming from the party headquarters to collect election guidelines that we will use for our primary elections. They are the same as those that prevailed in the run-up to the July 31 2013 election.”
Cde Chigwedere said those that fail to meet the criteria will fall at the first hurdle when the provincial election directorate meets at the weekend.
He could not divulge the names of those that had submitted their CVs.
But sources in Hwedza said some of those that submitted CVs included Engineer Anthony Taengwa Parehwa, Cdes Fani Chigwedere, Apolonia Munzverengi, Faith Chisango, Nathan Matemera, Brian Nyaguse and Rodwell Zinyemba.
