Harare-based model Tatenda John Njanike has launched an academy to groom and nurture talent.

In an interview, the multi-talented model said the Njanike Academy that was established on July 1, was inspired by the need to fill the gap in the industry as some models face challenges in getting recognition.

“I know I might have entered the profession a little bit late, but passion has driven me to where I am. Since 2019, I have never looked back.

“I registered for the Mister Zimbabwe national contest in 2019 and that became my launch pad. I found an urge to strongly pursue this path,” he                                                                    said.

“Being the first model in my family entailed having to introduce them to the commercial aspects of pageantry.”

Njanike said he drew inspiration from his parents who have stood by him.

“I have participated in a lot of fashion shows and events. I was also invited to feature as a guest model,” he said.

The highlight of his career was a trip to Poland, where he represented Zimbabwe in the Supranational contest.

“Being a male model is tough as some people still have mixed feelings towards men in the industry.

“In African countries modelling is mostly seen as female dominated.

“I would say, it is a representation of how men and women interact with fashion, beauty and its multi-faceted products and services. For the industry to grow, locals should appreciate and support the male model.”

Asked what he has learnt in the profession, the versatile model said; “The best lesson for me is that determination and integrity make things work well. Be focused and vigilant.”

Guided by Biblical principles, Njanike, believes God is his provider.

“When God wants to lift you up, He is not limited by the environment. Joseph was appointed governor during a famine. When problems emerge, opportunities emerge for problem solvers.”

Last month Njanike made headlines at the The Herald Lifestyle Fashion Extravaganza at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
