CHILDREN who have for years been forced to sit on the floor while reading and studying at Njube and Entumbane libraries will now have a more comfortable learning environment following the donation of new library furniture, repaired furniture and inventory lists, a development expected to improve access to library services for the wider community.

The furniture was handed over on Friday by Member of Parliament Prince Dube as part of efforts to improve learning conditions for children and other library users.

Senior Librarian Genevive Ndebele said the donation would significantly improve library services after years of shortages.

“Children used to sit on the floor because we did not have enough chairs and tables. This furniture fills that gap and will be very beneficial to both the children and the community,” she said.

The handover ceremony was attended by councillors, school children and community leaders. Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart was represented by Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, who delivered the Mayor’s speech.
In his speech, the Mayor commended Dube for using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to improve education infrastructure.

“Today’s donation complements our efforts to equip our libraries with digital knowledge systems. We assure you that the furniture will be put to good use and collectively preserved for future generations,” the Mayor said.

He noted that the donation followed Dube’s earlier contribution of Early Childhood Development classroom furniture to Mthombowesizwe Primary School, describing the MP’s interventions as an investment in knowledge.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dube said the donation was intended to create an environment that promotes reading and learning.

“Books without space to read them, and knowledge without a place to sit and think, will not change lives. With these new chairs, tables and shelves, we have created the right environment for studying,” he said.

Former Highlanders goal keepers’ coach Cosmas Zulu donated books to both libraries, saying, “I know these books will help keep children reading and occupied so they become better leaders tomorrow.”

Ward 12 Councillor Muziwakibo Masuku and Ward 10 Councillor Khalazani Ndlovu attended the event, with Ndlovu thanking Dube for supporting community development.

Learners from various schools performed poems, while Nkanyezi Catherine Mhlanga presented a poem highlighting the effects of bullying on communities. Mrs L. Sibindi also donated US$10 at each library, rewarding four learners who correctly answered educational questions.
