Nkashe teachers face water shortages

TEACHERS at Nkashe High School in Gwanda District are facing serious water shortages with a majority  contemplating leaving.
The school is located in Matshetshe area about 24km from Gwanda Town. Teachers from the school travel about 4km to the nearest water point, a challenge that has made the school unattractive especially to qualified teachers.

Some teachers revealed that they sometimes opted to ferry water from Gwanda Town instead of travelling to the water point.
Teachers who spoke to Chronicle on the sidelines of the school’s speech and prize giving ceremony on Thursday said life was unbearable at the school because of challenges in sourcing water.

“We have tried to seek attention from responsible authorities but nothing has been done to avert the problem.
“The situation here is just not conducive and most of us are thinking of transferring,” said one of the teachers.
Female teachers with children were said to be the most affected as they needed more water.

“We are sitting on a time bomb here and the environment is not good for our children. Toilets need to be cleaned but we are having challenges since we try by all means to save the water we will be having in our containers. Some of us at times collect water from Gwanda Town,” said another teacher.

Speaking at the same occasion, Nkashe High School outgoing headmaster Mr Marvelous Moyo said the water source which was available at the school dried up, a problem that needed urgent attention.

“In this area unavailability of water has become a big problem and we hope our former students and well-wishers will one day save our teachers from walking a long distance to fetch water,” said Mr Moyo.

Responding to the concerns of water shortages, the chief of the area, Chief Masuku, said there were plans to solve the problem.
“There are plans in place that I cannot mention here, to see that this problem of water in this area is brought to an end.

“It is my hope that at this time next year, complaints over water shortages would be a thing of the past,” he said.
Chief Masuku also encouraged villagers to pray for the rains to save lives of people and animals in the district.
