A 22-YEAR-OLD Nkayi man who mercilessly attacked a fellow villager, has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment.

Cleobard Moyo who was charged with unlawful entry and assault, was convicted on his own plea by Inyathi Resident Magistrate Mr Challenge Mahembe.

Mr Mahembe said only a custodial sentence was appropriate to meet the justice of the case.
He then sentenced Moyo to 30 months imprisonment but suspended six months of the sentence on condition that Moyo does not within the next five years commit a similar offence.

The court heard that last month Moyo went to Mrs Margaret Magodola’s homestead in Hompane Village, under Chief Tshugulu in Nkayi, armed with a machete intending to confront Mr Nathaniel Khumalo he accused of assaulting his uncle.

When Mr Khumalo saw Moyo approaching the homestead, he ran into a room and locked himself inside.

Moyo forcibly opened the door, went inside and struck Mr Khumalo several times with his machete.
Following the attack, Mr Khumalo collapsed and that is when Moyo stopped the assault.

The matter was later reported to the police leading to the arrest of Moyo. Mr Khumalo who sustained serious injuries, was admitted to hospital where he spent several weeks.
