A 39-year-old man from Nkayi has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for assaulting a senior citizen after an alcohol-fueled dispute.

Phumuza Ncube will, however, serve an effective eight months in prison, after eight months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Ncube, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had a violent altercation with Gilbert Moyo at Mpatshazwa Village, Chief Sikhobokhobo, Nkayi, on 26 June this year.

“On the 26th of June 2025, the offender and the complainant were drinking beer at the victim’s homestead when the offender became violent after being reprimanded for throwing a tripod cooking stand. He struck the victim on the ribs with a log and pushed him onto the fireplace, causing serious burns.”

“The matter was promptly reported to the police, leading to the offender’s arrest. The complainant was admitted to Mbuma Mission Hospital for medical treatment. Although the original charge was attempted murder, the court convicted Ncube on the lesser charge of assault, citing mitigating circumstances,” read a document from the NPA.

“Members of the public are warned against resorting to violence in resolving misunderstandings. Such acts have devastating consequences and can easily turn fatal. We encourage communities to exercise restraint and seek mediation or police assistance where conflicts arise.”
