Nkayi taking it one day at a time

NKAYI United might be sitting on top of the Zifa Southern Region Division One League, but head coach Daniel Ndlovu insists his side is not caught up in title talk.

With just eight games left, Nkayi underlined their promotion credentials by thumping Bosso 90, 5–2, at Luveve Stadium at the weekend.

The victory lifted them to 50 points from 22 matches, two clear of second placed Bulawayo Chiefs, who were held 1–1 by Hwange.

Fans and pundits have begun to tout Nkayi as favourites for the step up, but Ndlovu remains calm.

“At the moment, we are not looking at the title or the table. We are focusing on consistency and just taking it one game at a time,” he said.

That steady approach has carried them through the season. With assistants Chipo Tsodzo and Khonzani Ncube, Ndlovu has shaped one of the league’s most balanced teams. His reputation for spotting and grooming talent goes back to his time with Corrugated and Njube Sundowns, where he helped shape players like Thabani Masawi.

Still, the coach knows the run in will test his squad.

“Experience counts for a lot in this league, especially during the final stretch. But what matters most to us is staying consistent, staying focused, and giving our all in every game,” said Ndlovu.

Nkayi’s depth has been a difference maker. The ability to rotate without losing quality has helped them maintain their edge. Players like Grant Chigwenhese, Moreblessing Ernesto, Tino Chitete, Nhlanhla Fumapano, and Leroy Ndlovu have been key contributors, while goalkeeper Delron Chuma anchors a defence that has conceded just 11 goals.

The log table shows just how tight the battle is shaping up to be. Chiefs are right behind, with Hwange also within striking distance. But Ndlovu refuses to be drawn into the title debate, keeping his players locked on the next challenge.
