A man from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb last week sent tongues wagging when he attempted to board a commuter omnibus dressed like a woman.
23-year-old Terrance Mpofu had to scurry for cover in the nearby houses when a group of commuter omnibus driver and touts attempted to moot instant justice on me.
This is not the first time that, the self-confessed gay, Mpofu has been engulfed in controversy.
He is currently out on bail in a case of public indecency after, he together with members of the LGBTI community staged an illegal demonstration at the city’s commuter omnibus termini campaigning for LGBTI rights.
In the latest developments, a defiant Mpofu attempted to board a commuter omnibus dressed like a lady.
Onlookers revealed drivers and touts would have none of it and attempted to effect citizen’s arrest.
“Initially Mpofu was defiant declaring he was simply living up to his rights but when the crowd grew rowdier, he ran to the nearby houses.
“However, the drivers and touts did not give up, this led to police from Nkulumane police station intervening, they arrested Mpofu and I am told he was again charged with public indecency,” said a kombi driver who identified himself as Mr Nkosi Zhou.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Precious Simango confirmed Mpofu’s arrest.
“Yes, we handled a case of public indecency in Nkulumane. However, my worry is that this is not the first time we have arrested the same individual on such a crime, I think the courts must now have sterner measures when dealing with such individuals,” said the police spokesperson.
A friend to Mpofu revealed that after the latest arrest he now feared for his life as he alleged police officers had promised to “deal” with him.
“He told me that he is now trying to skip to neighboring South Africa as he is now not sure what will happen to him here,” said the friend who declined to be named fearing victimisation.
Gays and lesbianism in the country is largely viewed with a cringed eye with former President Mugabe equating them to pigs.
