Government has warned the public and land barons to stop selling land on wetlands saying this endangered lives.
National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Daniel Garwe issued the warning at a meeting welcoming the Shelter Afrique delegation led by its managing director, Thierno-Habib Hann, yesterday.
Minister Garwe said many people’s lives were in danger because of land barons and individuals who sold land on wetlands to the public.
“The Government is warning land barns and all those individuals who are selling land on wetlands to stop that because they are putting innocent people’s lives in danger.
“The Zimbabwe National Human Settlement Policy clearly states that no settlements are going to be allowed in all wetland areas and the Government has already started building houses in safe lands to relocate people in risky areas,” he said.
Minister Garwe said those who continue building on wetlands face arrest.
“The Government is going to put harsh conditions for all those who continue selling land on wetlands.
“The Government is trying to minimise the risks of floods for all those who have already built on riverbanks and wetlands,” he said.
