No end in sight to Nigeria’s power woes

LAGOS. — THE Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has appealed for patience from the more than 170 million residents amid incessant power outages.
The commission said it was doing all it could to ensure improved power supply.
Speaking at the ongoing Lagos Economic Summit, Eyo Ekpo, NERC Commissioner, Rates and Market Competition, stated that the current epileptic power situation in the country could not be addressed “within the next couple of months.”

He represented Chief Executive Officer, Dr Sam Amadi. Ekpo said most local power companies were faced with a lot of challenges.
He pleaded with Nigerians to exercise patience saying that fixing the “decay” in the power sector will not happen overnight.

Amadi further said that Nigerians should not expect stable supply of power across the country in the short term due to challenges of power generation, infrastructure, revenue collection, appropriate pricing and gas supply, among others.

He assured that while efforts were in top gear to tackle the challenged face by operators in the sector, the commission would ensure that there were no increases in electricity tariff in the coming months.

Despite recent privatisation exercise in the power sector, electricity supply has continued to drop. — CAJ News.
