No joy for cable thieves

along the Beitbridge-Masvingo road on Sunday evening while collecting their loot.
Lawrence Sibanda (28), Panganai Dube (28), Smart Dube (28) and Tendai Dube were all not asked to plead to contravening a section of the Electricity Act when they appeared before magistrate Miss Gloria Takundwa.

The four who were represented by Mr Patrick Teererai of Masawi and Partners Legal Practitioners were remanded in custody to March 19 for trial.
Two other suspects John Moyo and one identified only as Anderson are still at large.

Prosecutor Mr Foster Abheki told the court that on February 23, the four suspects connived to steal ZESA cables.
They armed themselves with a bolt cutter and a cut saw.

They then proceeded to Bubi area at around 10 pm driving a Nissan Atlas truck which was being driven by Lawrence Sibanda.
Mr Abheki said Smart and Tendai Dube went to a 11 kilovolt ZESA feeder at Bubi where they cut down  four poles using the saw.
This resulted in a black out in the area.

Lawrence and Panganai were monitoring the situation from the truck which was parked at Bubi Motel.
However, residents suspected that black out was unusual and alerted the ZESA officials and the police who then rushed to the scene where they arrested the suspects.

John Moyo and Anderson fled the scene.
Police recovered 340 kg of copper cables that were detached from the line into sizeable bundles along with the cutting instrument.
