No power, water at Town House

council.
Zesa Holdings switched off electricity at Town House over non-payment of a debt while taps have reportedly dried up for the past three days. Employees spoken to said senior managers had gone to Bulawayo to attend the trade fair.

“They are spending money in Bulawayo when they are supposed to fix things here. Imagine there has not been diesel for council vehicles that carry garbage and those that do other service delivery duties. Yet these guys choose to go to Bulawayo,” said one of the employees.

A check at Town House showed that electricity was yet to be restored.
“The generator has also developed a problem. We spent the day in the dark. We were doing nothing,” said the employee.

Toilets at the council seat were also in a mess as there was no running water.
“I do not know how they expect us to work and spend the day here?” said another employee.
Town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi could not explain why Town House had gone for three days without power.
“I have not been told why there is no electricity. There could be a fault. If it’s about payment — Zesa owes us millions,” he said.

In the past, the two entities have fought over electricity bills with council arguing that Zesa was charging them for non working street lights. Each of the street lights in the city is billed.

Sources said the city owed Zesa in excess of US$60 million, a figure Town House disputes.
“They are supposed to write that off with what they owe us,” said Dr Mahachi.
He promised to get a fuller report on the issue today.
