POLICE in Matabeleland South have called for responsible behaviour during the festive season, especially among youths who are accounting for most of the crimes.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube said police will be on the lookout of illegal activities such as underage children drinking in beer halls, drug and substance abuse and bottle stores that operate beyond stipulated times.
“During the festive season we have a lot of people that engage in irresponsible behaviour after drinking excessively. Youths lose sight of the long-term consequences of their actions such as going to jail and prioritise short-term thrills. We have deployed officers across the province to ensure peace and order at all festive celebrations, maintaining safety and security throughout the holiday season.
“As we celebrate the festive season, we urge the public to enjoy responsibly and respect the law. We understand that people want to have fun, but we won’t tolerate criminal activities, drug and substance abuse, or minors in restricted areas. We encourage everyone, especially minors, to know their limits and be mindful of curfews to avoid trouble. Let us work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for all,” she said.
Insp Dube also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor youngsters.
She also urged members of the public to resolve conflicts amicably and not resort to violence.
Police in the province have launched a provincial crime and traffic festive season campaign as part of efforts to ensure a crime and accident free holiday season.
Police teams have been deployed across the province to disseminate information under the crime awareness campaign.
