No selective apllication of law: AG

cases.
Speaking at a police pass-out parade in Harare yesterday, Mr Tomana said Government would take action against the individuals trying to defeat the course of justice.
“May, I thus give a stern warning to those who are engaging in corrupt activities that sooner or later they will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

Mr Tomana said the Zimbabwean justice system must be served by polished men and women, whose integrity on and off duty was beyond reproach.
He said it was vital for people to decisively deal with corrupt and shameless elements among police, prosecutors, magistrates and judges denying people opportune and impartial justice.
“Equally worrisome is the growing number of people, top officials of some political parties included, who are readily prepared to splash money in order to influence the outcome of cases before the courts,” he said.

Mr Tomana said it was quite unfortunate that some political parties and civic organisations, which were appendages to the West’s illegal regime change agenda, continued to shamefully parrot their master’s sentiments that, there is selective application of law and prosecution and no rule of law and democracy in Zimbabwe.

He said this was a political gimmick calculated at discrediting policies and democratic processes that were viewed as undermining the West’s interests in Zimbabwe.
“It should always remain etched in our hearts and minds that, living and departed liberation heroes, sacrificed their limbs and lives to restore democracy, rule of law and impartial application of law. It is, therefore, quite ironical that our erstwhile colonisers have the audacity and tenacity to preach to us on these processes.”

He said there was no selective prosecution in Zimbabwe.
Mr Tomana said prosecution was not a balancing act, where one ensures that equal numbers of people from different political parties or social background were prosecuted at a given time.
He said prosecution depends entirely on whether there was a prima-facie case that a crime had been committed.

“Similarly, rule of law does not mean protecting ministers or top officials of a particular political party from being arrested when they commit crimes but refers to equal application of the dictates of the country’s laws regardless of one’s social, political and economic status or station in life.
“Politicians should, thus appreciate that according to the laws of this land, no one is protected from prosecution except the President,” Mr Tomana said.
He said police officers do not consider political affiliation when arresting offenders but whether such persons had violated the law.

Mr Tomana said Zimbabwe would conduct a referendum, followed by harmonised elections since the inclusive Government was transitional and should obviously pave way for a substantive Government through these democratic processes.
He urged the force to ensure that peace and tranquility prevailed before, during and after these plebiscites.

“Pre-meditated political violence, anarchy and political grandstanding calculated at discrediting the elections should never be tolerated,” he said.
The AG said Zimbabweans had a democratic right to elect those that they want to govern them in a tranquil and conducive environment.

He urged stakeholders in the justice delivery system, particularly the police, prosecution and the judiciary to coalesce and work as a united family, a united front, underpinned by common objectives, interests and aspirations.

Yesterday 336 policemen and women graduated at the pass out parade after undergoing six months training.
The passout parade was attended by Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri, Mr Tomana’s wife Mrs Daphine Tomana, senior police officers and Government officials.
