Chief Reporter —
The infamous “Mafioso resolution”, which aimed to strip President Mugabe of his power to appoint Vice-Presidents, is not on the Zanu-PF conference agenda, The Sunday Mail has gathered.
On the other hand, acting Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairman Cde Dickson Mafios, who is said to have unilaterally pushed for the resolution, told this paper yesterday that he would “give his statement at the conference”.
Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Dr Ignatius Chombo told The Sunday Mail that Cde Mafios’ resolution had no majority support, and would not be discussed at this week’s 16th Annual National People’s Conference in Masvingo.
He said: “I am yet to see that resolution, but based on what I have seen, there is no reason why it should be there at the conference. Our Secretary for Legal Affairs, Cde Patrick Chinamasa, has the task of looking at resolutions that have been made by provinces and consolidating them according to their popularity.
“On my watch, that resolution is not popular, judging by the resolutions we have received. It could just be a lone voice. I have only seen it in the papers.”
In November, the Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central provincial executive met to draft conference resolutions, and Cde Mafios later reported that one of that meeting’s outcomes was for the party Vice-Presidents to be elected and not appointed by President and First Secretary Cde Mugabe.
However, the executive distanced itself from that position, even as Cde Mafios dug in. Contacted yesterday, Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central Secretary for Administration Cde Wonder Mashange asked this reporter to phone again after five minutes.
When the call went through, Cde Mashange handed the phone to Cde Mafios who retorted: “Handiti ndimi makati ndiri acting chairman? An acting chairman is not allowed to make such a comment. Manje tichawona paconference; I will give my statement.”
