ZANU-PF national chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday said the party will not entertain the imposition of candidates during the forthcoming party primaries saying the people should be allowed to elect candidates of their choice to represent the party.
Addressing thousands of Zanu-PF delegates at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) grounds in Bulawayo yesterday during the party’s 12th National People’s Conference, Cde Khaya Moyo urged party leaders across the country to respect the people and desist from imposing candidates.
“There must therefore be no imposition of candidates in any constituency. We must listen to the people and stay with the people. From the people we have come and to the people we shall return,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said the party would soon announce the election rules.
“The party’s primary election rules to be announced in due course after extensive consultations, must be adhered to,” he said.
“This is a defining conference, for it is certainly the last one before our next harmonised elections in 2012. The Inclusive Government has overstayed the hospitality of our people and must in due course be accorded an appropriate burial.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said the conference was crucial as elections were scheduled for next year.
“As a revolutionary party Zanu-PF has no political virus in its political culture. We must therefore win resoundingly in the coming elections.
“There is no option. The test of our party’s character has always been the ability to meet and overcome challenges,” he said.
“Those who are political appointees in Government or elsewhere must perform and remain accountable to the party and hence to the people, at all times.
“The party has to devise means to advise the President to recall non-performers. The clarion call is: ‘people first and performance now’.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said the Government was the product of the party and challenged party members who were in Government to work hard and promote the good image of the party.
“Corruption and other vices must be exposed and the culprits punished accordingly. Zanu-PF is not a shopping mall and those who use money to buy votes or support, must not hold leadership positions,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said Zimbabwe was a God-fearing nation and recited Proverbs Chapter 15 verse 33, which teaches that the fear of God is a school in skilled living and one must first learn to be humble and then enjoy glory later.
He said Zimbabweans should guard against neo-colonialism by Britain and its allies who want to plunder the country’s resources.
Cde Khaya Moyo said despite the sanctions imposed on the country, Zimbabwe had remained afloat.
He described President Mugabe as a tried and tested leader who has effectively safeguarded the principles and gains of the liberation struggle.
“Our great country, despite the debilitating illegal sanctions imposed on it by the West following our land reform programme, continues to be navigated through gusty political winds and stormy economic waters, by a tested leader whose political acumen, courage and pronounced vision assures us of our intended destiny. This iconic leader is no other than our revolutionary and charismatic President and First Secretary, Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
