HOSTS Zimbabwe will not have any representation in the elite category of the Troutbeck International Triathlon Union Africa Cup set for Nyanga today although they will field athletes in the other categories.
Triathlon Zimbabwe president Rick Fulton yesterday said Zimbabwe is yet to produce another athlete for the elite division since Chris Felgate retired from the sport.
“We have not had anyone getting into the elite division since Felgate retired,” said Fulton. The 31-year old Felgate was a national champion and represented Zimbabwe at the 2012 Olympics Games in London and the 2008 Games in Beijing.
The elite division will be the main event for the Troubeck International Union Cup and is set to draw athletes from South Africa, United States, Great Britain, Egypt, Namibia and Mauritius. Besides serving as a sporting event, the international event will also help Zimbabwe in boosting its sports tourism.
Athletes in the top division will take part in a 1.5km swim in Trout Dam that is fed from the mountain stream before they take a 40km bicycle ride.
The ride is a 6.6km circuit through the hilly road around the Troutbeck area before a 10km run.
While the hosts will not have any athletes in the elite category, scores of Zimbabweans are set to participate in the other divisions like the adults and youths for the under-15.
