One such homecoming is by United Kingdom-based Shingai Shoniwa who fronts electro-pop mega-group the “Noisettes” with Dan Smith. With a career that has stretched
over seven incredible years, Noisettes’ fizzy, witty mixture of all kinds of pop, given their own exotic twist, has brought them chart smashes like “Never Forget You” and “Don’t
Upset the Rhythm”, while their unique command of the stage has made them festival icons from Glastonbury to V Festival.
The multi-talented, bass guitar-playing singer and songwriter is somewhat of an iconoclast in the fashion industry as well.
Her shows are always spiced with bespoke fashion creations that give an almost otherworldly dimension to the pint-sized artiste’s stage presence. Her socially conscious side will also be on display as she will participate in Hifa’s programme of performances for prisoners.
This project, which has become a fixture at Hifa, aims at offering prisoners not only the chance to be entertained by Hifa artistes but also be in reciprocal musical workshops where talented prisoners will present their works to the artistes in a communal skills and experience exchange exercise. Shingai and Smith have a massive
global following and enjoy intense media attention.
Their omnivorous musical appetite consumes African music, jazz, and new adventures in dance music to generate their own distinctive hybrid of soul music.
Shingai, whose versatile vocals have been compared to Debby Harry, Kate Bush, Billie Holiday and Diana Ross, is proud of her Zimbabwean heritage and is relishing the chance, courtesy of British Council, to make her Telecel Main Stage debut at Hifa.
