THE Southern Region sportswriters will go into class today in an event sponsored by Nokel Security where they will discuss soccer rules’ changes, ethics and other topical issues. The partnership is one of many lined up by the Mehluli Sibanda led body which intends improving relations with associations and at the same time equipping journalists with rules and other technical aspects of particular disciplines.
Nokel Security managing director Kenneth Mhlophe said he was hopeful that his company’s gesture would go a long way in making the media understand soccer rules, use right terminology and protect the integrity of sport.
He emphasised that the media plays a pivotal role in society by writing to educate, inform and to entertain.
“The rules of football are constantly changing. You find fans debating after games, especially the offside rule, we hope the media will come out of the session in the know so that they will help the general public.
“So when I was approached with the idea of holding a workshop on educating sports journalists, who write about soccer every day, I jumped at the idea since soccer is the number one sport in the land and I love it too,” said Mhlophe.
Mhlophe said a knowledgeable media educates the nation.
“Sports journalists are very important people when we talk of sport, so they need to be well ahead of the fans because readers believe what they read, so this workshop is very important to them,” he said.
Mhlophe is not new to sportswriters’ activities as he has previously sponsored the regional goalkeeper’s monthly award. Seasoned coach Cosmas Zulu will deliver a paper on appropriate terminology to be used.
Media practitioners from Bulawayo will take part in the workshop. Ricky Zililo the regional vice-chairman of Sportswriters Association described it as a positive development for the game. He said such interaction helps develop journalists.
