Nominations of Zimbabweans are being sought for the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Commendation Award for Community Development, Peace Building and Fostering Unity.
The award is one of the seven new awards created by President Mnangagwa last year through Statutory Instrument 213. The call for nominations was made by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda in a statement last Friday.
“Government intends to award deserving Zimbabwean citizens with the Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Commendation Award for Community Development, Peace Building and Fostering Unity,” he said.
“The individuals should be luminaries who have distinguished themselves through outstanding and consistent transformative service in the improvement of livelihoods at community level, engendering peace making and fostering unity.
“The Government of Zimbabwe, therefore, invites nominations of people eligible for conferment of this award. Note that a valid nomination should be accompanied by a justification in the form of a brief detailed profile or citation of the achievements for which the individual is deemed deserving of this special recognition and national honour.
“The brief profile or citation should celebrate and immortalise the achievements of the nominee for posterity.”
The closing date for nominations is May 3.
The late former Vice President Nkomo is a liberation struggle stalwart who helped mobilise people in resistance against colonial rule that resulted in independence in 1980.
He is known as Father Zimbabwe because of his huge role in the fight against white minority rule.
The other awards that were also gazetted in SI213 are: The Order of the Great Zimbabwe in Diamond awarded to luminaries, heroes and heroines of the First Chimurenga; the Zimbabwe International Friendship Award awarded to foreigners and foreign organisations that have made a great contribution towards building and consolidating friendship and solidarity ties with Zimbabwe.
The National Historical Legacy Award also awarded to Zimbabweans who have selflessly and relentlessly dedicated themselves to the preservation of Zimbabwe’s peace, order, sovereignty, integrity and unity, thereby fostering Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development.
The Jairos Jiri Humanitarian Award is another one being awarded to persons who have worked and dedicated their lives to the betterment of humanity through rendering humanitarian service, while the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award for Service in Human Capital Development and the Herbert Wiltshire Pfumaindini Chitepo Commendation Award for Justice and Human Rights.
