Nominations for PSL elections set to close

NOMINATIONS for the Premier Soccer League elections close tomorrow with three candidates vying for the two available positions.
Clubs’ chairpersons will next month vote for the chairman and his deputy to lead the board of governors.
Dynamos boss Kenny Mubaiwa is challenging incumbent chairman Twine Phiri and the duo have already picked up their nomination forms.
Peter Dube of Highlanders is seeking another term as the league’s vice-chairman.

After elections, clubs will then choose three governors who will join the chairman and his deputy to form a five-member emergency committee that will only be in office for a season.

This committee will meet when there are urgent matters throughout the season as governors only have three meetings a season.
Zifa lawyer Ralph Maganga said PSL elections have been postponed from February 23 to March 9 to allow the league time to amend its constitution.
The PSL will now meet on the initial election date to align its constitution with Zifa’s constitution before the March 9 elections.

“Despite moving PSL elections to March, the date of closing nominations remains as February 11 with the electoral committee sitting two days later,” said                        Maganga.

“The PSL will have to meet on February 23 to deliberate on their constitution and have it aligned with Zifa’s since they are an affiliate.
“It is a process which we expect to go smoothly and once that is done they will have their elections.”

Clarity on corporate governance, roles and responsibilities of governors as well as secretariat are expected to be enshrined in the amended PSL constitution.

The constitution will seek to give PSL governors, who are the custodians of the league, the power to run the affairs of the league through the secretariat.
PSL was given 16 seats at the Zifa Assembly and this means that all Premiership clubs’ chairpersons will be expected to be vetted before going to Zifa.

The new constitution has also shut out club secretaries from attending governors’ meetings and contesting for PSL elections.
