THE ZIFA Northern Region Division One League got underway over the weekend with Shamva Mine registering the biggest win in a 6-0 thumping of Karoi United.

Ngezi Platinum Stars’ developmental side got the season underway in an early fixture on Friday by getting the better of Pam FC 3-1 at Baobab Stadium.

Forward, Tinashe Mabvudzi, was the star of the match, scoring twice before Gerald Bhoko rounded off the scoring.

Jairos Kasondo scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

Golden Eagle and Herentals Under-19 side, renewed their rivalry in the Northern League after they both slipped in the championship marathon last season.

The Young Students humbled the hosts  in a 2-1 win at Ellis Robbins on Saturday.

ZRP Harare made use of home advantage by edging Come Again 1-0.

Harare City, who are tipped for a quick return to the Castle Lager Premiership, collected a full set of points by edging Concession FC 2-1, while Chinhoyi Stars kick started their campaign with a 1-0 win over OMANIA, with Delroy Lengelelani netting the solitary goal in the 78th minute.

Chinhoyi Stars’ coach, Richard Chunga, who recently left Chegutu Pirates, said he was satisfied by how his men reacted and admitted that they were given a good run by their opponents.

“It was a tough match played at a high tempo. Our opponents gave us a good game in both halves, but I was happy with how the boys responded and won the game.

“I’m sure we have a good squad that might cause some upsets if the boys can show more of what they did in our first victory,” said Chunga.

“It’s very encouraging to win your first game as a club’s new coach. I was impressed by the attitude exhibited by the boys in the entire game.

“They showed more hunger and I’m happy for the boys. We are going to try our best to win as many games as possible.

“It’s still too early to make conclusions, but with the players at my disposal, I believe we are going to have an enjoyable campaign.”
